    Default Cruise control how to!

I had this saved guys, so just copied it. Sick!

How to install Cruise Control in Ford Escort ZX2 (AUTO) 3/20/06
(Not responsible for any damage-attempt at own risk)
    You will need:
    -Servo Box with Throttle Cable
    -Steering Wheel with Cruise Controls
-Plastic Box with Plunger for Brake

Make sure you have this wire harness on passenger side

Picture of Servo Box with throttle cable

Install Servo Box and plug the wire harness from the first picture into the box. Route the
cable as seen in the picture.

Important! Unhook battery when working with airbags. Remove airbag from steering
wheel- there is 1 bolt on each side of airbag.

(Caption says: “cruise wire harness, this is where the plug from cruise control equipped wheel will plug into.”)

Unhook the wire harness’s and airbag.
Next, remove steering wheel. I ran into trouble doing this. A steering wheel puller
would not take it off, so I did the “pull left, pull right, then pull up and then down”.
Important to leave the bolt screwed in maybe 4-5 revolutions so you don’t pull it off into
your chest. Mine came off very simple using this method.

Now install cruise equipped steering wheel. Make sure you attach all the wire harness’s
and the cruise control wire harness.

Now locate the wire harness box with the plunger piece which will go above brake pedal. There is a plug up there that this will plug into.

Picture of plunger piece box installed above the brake pedal.

You should be complete!! Hook up battery and take for test drive.

*For a manual, I believe you just need to add a second plastic plunger piece which will be
put above the clutch pedal- same way as brake pedal.
Special Thanks to Nate (nike13857) on TeamZX2 for helping me out with the
    installation.

    Probably a silly question.

So if I am missing the harness in the passenger side of the engine bay I'm out of luck? Or is it a section of cable that could be clipped in somewhere?

You'd hafta swap a harness, or route new wires. PITA. FTL

I just swapped my cruise from the 98 to the SR, and I coulda swore somebody had this up somewhere on here already.

no if you have the harness attached to the pass side fender you are good all you have to do is plug it in bolt it down, run the throttle cable, install your cc wheel and put in the plunger. easy swap, it took me about 30 min to do it all. cruise control on a manual transmission FTW really helps me out on long trips

    plug circle in blue, FTL!!

this is not the plug the write up is refering to. The plug you need to have is a large black plug.

Also, you will not need an additional plunger if you have a manual transmission. The clutch pedal already has the plunger necessary. The only one you will need is the one for the brake pedal.

^^ this is true. I didnt know i only needed one i actually bought 2 when i was at the junkyard. The brown plunger under the dash attached to the clutch pedal does double duty.

My "kit" came with some type of control circuit. It contained a fuse and is attached to the switch "stick" that is mounted on the left of the steering column. The kit that I installed was purchased directly from the dealer. Too bad I did not get around to finding a like-interior-color steering wheel with the controls on them...

If I really cared about our customers I would have sent them somewhere better.

Damn, I thought it was that little white one too. Guess my car isn't wired for cruise

I was thinking about buying dareall's cruise setup on eBay too.

you are out of luck if you want it to be this easy. The dealer installed version of the cruise control is a bit more involved, but still relatively simple. I have the setup in a box around somewhere. When I find it, I will scan the instructions and post them

I know how to program..... what if I just write up a program on a chip that controls the servo and add some buttons to control it, plus add a sensor for the brake... would i be able to control that servo? (so all control of the cruise control is external from the ECU and has nothign to do with it, ECU just sees that the throttle is opening/closing) im guessing yes.. anyone have a schematic for the wires by any chance? would doing this be a bad idea?

the cruise is normally controlled by the ECU. The dealer installed unit has it own controller within the wiring harness that comes with it. If you think you can handle doing the programming for it and wiring, then go for it. I can sell you the parts pictured with the plug ends if you want to do it. I can even send you the wiring diagrams for the install
